How be a Great Music Parent by Art Scott

Some parents were blessed to take piano lessons and or play other instruments.  Fine Arts is a different world that the sports world, but really, not all that different.  Here are some common threads that I have found exist.

Music Instruction / Education  versus Sports Education

-Teach the brain to execute certain tasks

-Accomplish these tasks quickly in real time

-Develop muscles and fine motor control as needed

-Be proud of winning your goals / games / recitals

-Raw potential is developed into a much more refined talent and greater abilities.

-Instruction from experts is crucial in the correct, appropriate development of skill sets.

-Learn and be taught by parents / teachers / coaches how to overcome defeat and ways to cope through learning struggles.

Some of the differences in Music / Piano / Instruments include;

Team sports can be thrilling.   Piano is a solo 'sport' so if your having a 'bad day', you do not have a whole team of players to pick up the slack.   You are the team.   This takes interventions from a parent and teacher to make sure students know how to stay encouraged and not quit - just because a piece is hard.

I recently had a mom express to me how much she preferred the piano and the lessons her 6 and 8 year old are enjoying, over team sports
.   I believe each child is born with certain innate talents.  I further believe it IS the job of any good parent, grandparent, guardian to discern what a child is good at and them as many opportunities, through trial and exposure to explore these given talents are and then hone into develop these talents to the fullest.

A well rounded education which includes the Fine Arts is the ideal.

Try baseball, try piano, try other instruments, try singing, try dance, try painting and drawing.

Find what your child does best.  I would be privileged to speak with you about your musical goals for your family and children.

All the best,
